Following early bud burst an exceptionally hot June made for highly uniform flowering. Summer in the Médoc, despite the unsettled skies, was relatively dry. However, a strong anticyclone which set in from 26th August and lasted 24 days without interruption, certainly contributed to the very high quality of this vintage. Unbroken sunshine boosted photosynthesis, while a fresh northerly wind slowed the breakdown of malic acid in the fruit. Harvesting started in rainy weather, which in no way affected the excellent condition of the grapes with their rich sugar content, high levels of acidity and thick skins. Initial pumping over released splendid, concentrated tannins and sparkling fruit. This was especially true for the Cabernet Sauvignon which combined strength and distinction. |

Château Pontet-Canet 1996 - Tasting Notes: A ruby robe showing a slight change in colour. The very powerful nose displays surprising complexity, which includes liquorice, candied fruit and candied citrus fruit. There are also tertiary aromas of tobacco with animal hints, which are the hallmark of the Pontet-Canet terroir. On the palate, the attack is full and the tannins develop massively with great length. It is a very traditional Pauillac which is just starting to open out. It will effortlessly live on for half a century. |
