After the record heat of 2003, 2004 will be remembered as the year of contrasts. Indeed it was the driest year for a very long time. And yet, without being especially wet, August experienced higher than average rainfall. The relatively early start to the growth cycle did not lead to early harvesting. Cool conditions delayed development of the vine stalks and therefore flowering. Summer further accentuated this phenomenon. Fortunately, September saved the situation with a long period of heat and no rain. The Merlot was of course harvested first; on 30th September and 1st October for the young vines, and from the 4th onwards for the old plots. After a few days’ interval it was the turn of the Cabernet Franc on 11th October. We harvested the Cabernet Sauvignon from 12th October, paying close attention to ripening in each micro-terroir. |

Château Pontet-Canet 2004 - Tasting notes : Very deep, almost opaque robe. Very intense, spicy, complex, refined nose, in which mingle red and black berry aromas (blackberries, cherries and Morello cherries) alongside liquorice, coffee and vanilla notes. On the palate the attack is full, then the wine develops both length and flavour. The silky tannin finish bears the inimitable hallmark of a great Pauillac. The palate aromas are very long. It is truly a very great wine |

Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet 2004 - Tasting notes : The colour is an intense red. The very complex nose expresses a controlled barrel raising with grilled vanilla aromas of totally balanced fruits. On the palate, the attack is round based on tannic structure of great finesse. The finale is very soft. It really is a wine of pure pleasure. |
